About OET
OET is an English test for healthcare professionals. It is offered for 12 professions: Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology and Veterinary Science. This site has full practice tests for the Medicine and Nursing versions.
Listening and Reading are the same papers for every profession. They use health-related material that is meant to be accessible across professions. Writing and Speaking are different for each profession: a letter, and two role-plays, set in that profession's workplace.
There are four sub-tests. Listening is about 40 minutes (42 questions). Reading is 60 minutes (42 questions), with 15 minutes for Part A and then 45 minutes for Parts B and C. Writing is 45 minutes: 5 minutes to read the case notes, then 40 minutes to write. Speaking is about 20 minutes: an unassessed warm-up, then two role-plays with 3 minutes to prepare and about 5 minutes to speak.
Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting, on paper at a test centre, on a computer at a test centre, or as OET@Home. Speaking is part of the same test administration and is often on another day, usually within eight days before or after the other three. If Speaking is not taken in that window, OET's regulations give it a score of 0.
Each sub-test is reported on a scale from 0 to 500 in steps of 10, and that number is mapped to a letter grade from A (highest) to E (lowest). OET does not report an overall score or grade. There is no single pass mark: each regulator, employer or university sets the grades it needs, often a B (350) on each sub-test, and some accept a C+ (300) on one sub-test. Check the organisation you are applying to.
Nursing uses the same Listening and Reading papers. The Nursing Writing task is still one profession-specific letter (referral, transfer, discharge, or a letter to advise or inform a patient, carer or group), and Nursing Speaking is still two role-plays, but the candidate is the nurse and the scenarios are nursing scenarios. This site has a full Nursing practice test, with a nursing letter and two nursing role-plays.
